Government Agencies Warn Of Imminent Ransomware Attacks On US Hospitals

US federal government agencies have warned healthcare providers, especially hospitals, of a Trickbot malware and ransomware targeted campaign, with at least three hospitals publicly confirming being struck within the week. The Trickbot trojan and Ryuk ransomware are being cited as the primary tools involved in executing the attacks.

Statements have so far come in from the Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the Department of Health and Human Services to insure those in these sectors are on high alert.

What You Can Do

Make sure you have backed up your systems if you are in a hospital or a part of a healthcare provider (this is also a good tip for any industry). It’s also recommended that you temporarily disconnect systems from the internet where possible – particularly if you’re storing Personally Identifiable Information (PII). If you work with an MSP, check with them before doing so to make sure this is okay. You should also avoid using personal email not associated with your company for work-related subject matter.

Be on the lookout for emails that claim to be corporate communications, containing the name of the victim or their company in the text or its subject line. Also be wary of emails that contain Google Docs. Make sure your email filters are advanced enough to spot more complex, multi-link phishing tactics – like the ones being used in these attacks.
